The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
